The Long Island Regional Planning Council is inviting proposals from qualified organizations to conduct a comprehensive public opinion poll focused on homeowner attitudes and behaviors related to fertilizer use on lawns and gardens.
In 2015, the Long Island Nitrogen Action Plan (LINAP) was launched to address nitrogen pollution in Long Island’s waters. Led by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the Long Island Regional Planning Council (LIRPC), the plan aims to reduce nitrogen runoff from wastewater, stormwater, and fertilizers.
Nitrogen pollution is a major threat to water quality, fueling harmful algal blooms, fish kills, and the degradation of estuaries and marine habitats. It also contaminates the groundwater, Long Island’s primary drinking water source.
A key contributor to nitrogen pollution is the overuse of fertilizers on lawns. Despite its environmental impact, many homeowners continue to heavily fertilize their lawns in pursuit of a lush, green appearance. To effectively reduce fertilizer use, it’s crucial to understand homeowners’ motivations and attitudes toward fertilization, and develop targeted messaging that encourages more sustainable practices.
The public opinion poll should provide insights into the target population’s opinions, attitudes, motivations, and behaviors, as well as effective messaging and communication strategies to encourage homeowners to reduce their fertilizer usage.
