Nature Exploration at Cranberry Bog County Nature Preserve with North Shore Land Alliance

Long Island trail lovers will explore this magnificent 165-acre preserve, complete with abundant fresh water, a diversity of wildlife and carnivorous plants, when it is at is most beguiling.
This 165 acre preserve is part of the drainage system of the Peconic River and serves as a natural reservoir for our fresh water supply. It allows for hiking that includes sights of the Little Peconic River, various plants, birds, reptiles, and other wildlife creatures. Within the preserve lies Sweezy Pond and Cheney Pond, which is surrounded by White-Cedar swamp with trees as large as 16″ diameter. It is a haven of natural, unspoiled beauty on the edge of a rapidly growing urban center.

Fall Family Fishing Festival at Hempstead Lake State Park

Attendees will learn fish identification, local aquatic ecology, casting safety and techniques and fishing regulations. Following an educational introduction about fishing on Long Island, I FISH NY will conduct basic fishing instruction, ecology and stewardship of local aquatic habitats, fish identification, regulations and casting safety and techniques. The I FISH NY program of the DEC will provide instruction, rods and bait free of charge.
