Improvements to the Sagtikos/Sunken Meadow State Parkway are needed to upgrade the only north-south, limited access highway in Suffolk County. The Long Island Regional Planning Council has expressed support for the New York State Department of Transportation’s operational study, included in a letter to NYSDOT dated January 17, 2017.
The Sagtikos/Sunken Meadow State Parkway was built in the early and mid-1950’s as part of Robert Moses’ Long Island Regional Park and Parkway Plan. It was designated a National Historic Parkway in 2012.
The parkway runs from King’s Park in the north to Bay Shore in the south. It intersects numerous east-west arteries, including Routes 25 and 25A, the Northern and Southern State Parkways and the Long Island Expressway. It handles approximately 90,000 vehicles per day between the Southern State and the LIE and approximately 65,000 vehicles per day between the LIE and the parkway’s terminus at Route 25A.
NYSDOT has recommended addressing a number of deficiencies, including narrow medians and shoulders, short access ramps and acceleration lanes, tight loop ramps, reduced driver visibility at access ramps, and low vertical clearance. Improving these conditions will increase safety, decrease congestion, and accommodate the region’s growing infrastructure needs.
LIRPC supports the early action and long-term alternatives proposed by NYSDOT, including additional travel lanes and reconfigured interchanges. Implementing these changes will not disturb the defining features of this historic parks corridor.
